Hikaru Dojo doesn't claim to be everything to everyone. We have always tried to target the 'thinking person'. We justify this by having invested a lot of time researching the strategic meaning of each Taekwondo martial art form. The forms, a traditionally accepted method of transmitting martial arts, in themselves guide what martial arts students need to learn. You will find that the first few levels of Hikaru Dojo is always dictated by what has worked and been proven traditiionally.
It is not to say that we are bound solely to martial arts tradition. The martial arts system has hundreds of years of intructional wisdom in built into them. This includes the ability for 'self correction'. Meaning when a student is learning a smaller set of traditional techniques, the pressure to create value or transmit experience lies on the instructor. You will find that Hikaru Dojo instructors always attempt to address realistic combat oriented situations during any exercise, traditional or otherwise.

FAQs on Hikaru Ryu and Martial Arts
Is there a difference between your martial
art and self defence?
CW: A martial art is a
stylistic treatment of military knowledge that trains the practitioner to respond
in specific ways for specific encounters. Self defence on the
other hand deals with a significant amount of ambiguity and should
offer a mental and physical plan of action for surviving violent
assaults. At HRGB, members get the opportunity to learn both! Click
here for more on the difference
between martial arts, self defence, and women's self defence.
What is your approach to teaching the
martial art?
CW: I try
to gradually introduce both physical and mental processes to students.
In a culture where there is a natural curiosity towards the why
and how, I find great joy in providing detailed
answers to the background of moves and the strategies to make
them work. This is not the usual approach taken with most instructors,
but it is the approach that brings the most satisfaction to me.
What does Hikaru Ryu Gendai Budo mean?
CW: 'Hikaru' in Japanese means bright or brilliant
and 'Ryu' means school or path. Hikaru Ryu thus means the 'Bright
Path'. While we follow a distinct traditional martial arts lineage,
we recognize the innovations in our system and thus tag on 'Gendai'
which denotes our art as post 19th century, or 'modern' in the
martial arts time line. Budo is a generic term for martial art.
What can students expect from practice
sessions?
CW: Hikaru Ryu teaches primarily a hard martial
art. ‘Hard’ meaning that we use a direct force to
counter an attack on us or an aggressor. However, since we do
appreciate the value of soft-style
martial arts, each student will learn how to grapple and redirect
the attacker's strength. Students can anticipate spending time on katas
(since they teach good fundamentals and improve cardiovascular
output), application of learned techniques, and sparring.
